The CBT is a simple course designed to teach new riders the very basic skills they need to survive on todays busy roads. It usually lasts around 6 hours but varies depending upon an individuals ability and existing skill level.
The course is mandatory and without a valid CBT completion certificate (DL196) your provisional entitlement on your driving licence isn't valid either. This applies to *everyone* even if you're a hundred and six and used to ride a 650 BSA as your daily transport for a decade or two.
If you wish to ride a 125cc motorcycle there are *no* exceptions - unless you have full category D entitlement on your driving licence you *must* have a current CBT certificate.
The certificates last for two years after which time, unless you have taken and passed both parts of the full motorcycle test and your theory, they must be renewed by retaking the entire course again.
Insurance is another mandatory item which you will need before you can legally ride on the British Highway. The bare minimum required is third party cover which insures you for damages to another person or their property. For further details take a look at our bike insurance page.

If you are 18 or under you will not be able to get finance without a guarantor. Even if you are under 21 you may struggle to get finance at a reasonable rate unless you have already proved your ability to make regular repayments in the past with previous loans or credit cards. The best way to get a good credit rating is to get a credit card, use it regularly and pay off the full amount you have borrowed every single month.
